Slow cookers are awfully useful when you n need to start preparing meals earlier so that they are ready by day's close. However, sometimes the recipes become so bland that there's not much enjoyment at what you end up eating. Some recipes end up having too much fluid and the end result is kind of a drag.
This publication makes its own contribution. It begins with "tips." How do you choose the right slow cooker? Follow some rules--don't overdo liquids (Amen!), brown meat, be careful with dairy products, etc. After that, we have a series of sections, providing recipes for appetizers, soups and stews, sandwiches, weeknight menus, meals for two, side dishes. There is a helpful index of recipes at the close. There are only 98 pages of text, so there is not a plenitude of recipes. But, for a magazine issue, not bad. . . .
Appetizers? One example: Cajun style chicken wings. Preparation time, 30 minutes. Cooking time, 3-4 hours at low heat. Ingredients include chicken wings, Cajun seasoning, chili sauce, onion, red bell pepper, tapioca, jalapeno, garlic, hot pepper sauce. When I think, chicken wings, I think Buffalo, but this recipe is interesting and I think will satisfy (haven't made it yet).
One way I use my slow cooker is to prepare dinner after a long day's work. This issue has a number of recipes for this purpose, such as: Classic pot roast with garlic-thyme gravy, Marmalade glazed corned beef with carrots and potatoes, sauerbraten with gingersnap gravy, and barbecued baby backed ribs.
One nice twist is recipes for two. Many families only have two folks, and such recipes are pretty helpful for them.
All in all, a nice issue of a magazine that can provide nice meals for people.
