Cold-Weather Cooking Review

Cold-Weather Cooking

I love this book. I've been into cooking since I was about 5 and I own over 4,000 cookbooks, but this one is definitely my fav. I bought it in December 1990 and at this point, have cooked nearly every recipe in the book. They are all fabulous. I have never had one of these recipes fail.
I have given this book as a gift many times over the years, and the recipients have all come to love the book as much as I do.
Here are some of the standout recipes:
Creamed Spinach - it's a very simple recipe but the best I've ever tasted
Mustard Creamed Onions - a zippy twist on a Thanksgiving tradition
Spanish Garlic Soup - rich and unusual
Raised Waffles - worth the price of the book just for this recipe!
Apricot Ginger Cream Scones - totally fattening & totally worth it
Turkey Mole - the best mole I've ever had, way better than most restaurants
Spicy Shrimp, NOLA Style - just like Pascal Manale's
The thing I love about these recipes is that even the ones I don't think I'll like (such as Rhubarb Custard Pie) come out great. SLC also has a fun, chatty and erudite writing style, so reading her cookbooks is almost as much fun as cooking from them.
Many of the recipes are a bit long and can take awhile to make, but the end product is worth every minute of prep time.

I love this book! There are so many wonderful recipes. I turn to this cookbook when I can't decide what to make for dinner. The pictures are great, and there's one for each recipe. None of the recipes are more than 1 page long, and each lists the prep time and cook time. There's even fast & easy chicken ideas on the inside cover. One of my favorite recipes is the Honey-Glazed Chicken Breasts - they're delicious and easy to make. I highly recommend it!

Simply Ming One-Pot Meals: Quick, Healthy & Affordable Recipes Review

Simply Ming One-Pot Meals: Quick, Healthy and Affordable Recipes

As a Food Network follower from the early days, I remember Ming Tsai and his soothing, elegant cooking show "East Meets West" from the late '90s. When I saw his familiar smile on the cover of his new book, "Simply Ming, One-Pot Meals", I was intrigued. Upon opening the book I found myself making a dash for the register, salivating over which creation I was going to try first. This book is beautiful and very well thought out. EVERY recipe has a gorgeous photograph to accompany it and the range of recipes is astounding. Delightful beverage pairings accompany each dish. Next up on my list are his "Orange-Ginger Lamb Shanks with Barley" (with a Bordeaux blend, like Chateau Centemerle, Haut Medoc, France) and "Chile Pork Fillets with Garlic Brussels Sprouts" (with a big, buttery California Central Cost Chardonnay like Peter Michael). These one-pot wonders and their pairings are my new entertaining secret!

Folgers Special Roast Ground Coffee, 34.5-oz Can (Pack of 2) Review

Folgers Special Roast Ground Coffee, 34.5-oz Can (Pack of 2)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been drinking this regularly for several months, and the coffee tastes excellent for being neither Dunkin Donuts or Starbucks. It also doesn't lose much flavor and still tastes pretty good even after a month or 6 weeks in the pantry. It is medium strength, about on par with Dunkin Donuts regular, without the obvious disinctiveness. I drink it for my regular morning coffee where I only get a single cup before work, and drink DD on the weekends when I go through a full pot.
The biggest problem with this listing is price; Wal-Mart and Kroger have been selling these containers regularly for months at under $6.00, or under $12.00 for 2. To be exact, our local Wal-Mart had a large display of these out yesterday for $5.88 each.
At $5.88, this coffee is a great deal; at $11.00 not so much.
